New Terrain

Unread postby Eternal_Rocker_Chick » Sun, 7th Jan 2007 19:56

Description
With this mod, you can change your terrain to different colours

Known Issues
Only works with the terrain quality on medium and reflective water off

Tutorial

In Jpog/Data/terrain.

(BACKUP ALL OF YOUR TERRAIN FILES BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS MOD)

1. delete all gbase/gdetail files for a patchy desert/ green terrain with no grass.

Image

2. delete all gbase files except gbase_3_128.raw for a patchy desert/ green terrain with grass (my fav!)

Image

3. delete all gbase/gdetail files except gbase_0_128, gbase_1_128, gbase_2_128 for a dark grey brown terrain with grass all over.

Image

4. delete all the rbase/rdetail .tba and .raws for a dark green terrain (boring i know)

Image

5. delete rbase_2_128.raw and gbase_3_128.raw for a very dark brown with ocassional patches of green in.

Image

There is also another way to change terrain. In the terrain folder, there are the files DETAIL565.dds, DETAIL1555.dds and DETAIL4444.dds. Now these files are the colour of the mountains. If you make the colour any darker, it will colour the whole island, thus changing the terrain. However, if you make it any lighter, the terrain goes funny, and it's hard to get around the strange glow it gives your island.

Use this plugin for photoshop to access edit the files
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/phot ... ugins.html

Example, if i made all three files a dark reddy brown colour, and turned the grass off i, you get a volcanic like terrain

Image

NOTE: due to demand, here are the files you'll need to have volcanic terrain. http://www.jurassicisland.ch/CEP_rel/Mo ... lcanic.zip

Inside the .zip, there will be three files. Place these in your JPOG/Data/Terrain directory. You'll know if you've got the right directory if it asks you 'are you sure you want to replace these files?' or whatever

If i wanted a desert-like terrain, i would make the detail files an extremely light yellow, and to counteract the main problem of the terrain messing up, delete all the gbase/gdetail files apart from gbase3_128.raw

Image

Basically, just try experimenting with different combinations and see what you come up with. I know that gbase3_128.raw is the grass file. Without that, you won't have grass on your terrain, regardless of whether or not you turn it on in the options.

If you figure out any good ones, be sure to post a screenie! :D

You can also change the original sky to one of the weather presets. I haven't tested yet, but i think the weather should still work as normal and when it goes to sunny, it will instead go to your preset.
I included these because if you change your terrain to a desert, You could also change the weather to heatwave to make it more realistic. And if you have your terrain as a dark green, you could change your weather to cloudy to support it.

Anyway, to change the weather. This is my example to make it cloudy:

Take the skyrain_16.dds from the JPOG/Data directory . Change the name to skycols1555.dds.Then move that file into JPOG/Data/Terrain and overwrite the original (make sure you backed it up!) And there you go. You can use any of the weather dds files for your sky. I haven't found any bugs with these yet.

These are quite obvious, but i'll put these in anyway:
skyheat gives you the orange sky in a heatwave
skyrain gives you the cloudy sky when it rains
skynorm gives you the normal sky (useful if you ever lose the original)
skytorn gives you a cloudy sky

These names also come in 2 different qualties, apart from SkyRain which has 4. SkyRains are:

skyrain.dds = worst quality
skyrain_16.dds
skyrainL.dds
skyrainL_16.dds = best quality

I have a new terrain. Its not good but hey, it looks cool. Bassically its just all black but it looks like the dinos are having fun walking in the air!:) So here goes.....

REMEMBER: BACK UP ALL FILES FOR TERRAIN!!!!

Go to to Data/Terrain and:

Delete all gbase/gdetail files apart from

gdetail_0
gdetail_0_1
gdetail_1
gdetail_1_1
gdetail_1_2
gdetail_3_1
gdetail_4
" _5
" _6
" _7

Also in the same file delete all rbase files apart from:
rbase_2
rbase_5
rbase_6
rbase_6_128.raw

Thats all. Sorry no pics cause jpog is on ma other pc and it dosent have internet!
Enjoy

These terrain types look good.

Lack of PC game, however, means that I cannot use these
I can see your hypocrisy.

I'm confused.

But I like the progress. I hope we can someday make it so we can put some of each type in one game.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to turn the grasses a little more brownish so that it still covers all the ground?

Go into the setup.exe, and put all the terrain options to medium, instead of high. Should work then.
