Skinning Tutorial

Unread postby Legion » Tue, 11th Sep 2007 16:35

As part of the Modding Genesis v5.0 project, I'm proud to present the all-new skinning tutorial!

I've been writing this for the last week, and, although it isn't finnished, it now has more than enough information to be released, so, without further due, here it is:
tutorials.php?mode=skinning

This page comprehends:
What You Will Need - a list and short description of all the tools you'll be using on this tutorial
Tutorial - a step by step guide into extracting and importing dds skins from and to a TML file
Observations - some sidenotes that are worth to be pointed out
Hex Locations - The location of each skin on each digsite TML file. No more will you depend on others to find the location of a dinosaur for you!
Frequent (and) Annoying Questions - hopefully, this'll help even the less knowledgeable on skinning.

Ah, about time it was revised. Do you plan on making the FP rank img and a Photoshop tutorial, I don't know how to color without erasing the skin patterns.

Well, this won't teach you *how* to skin, either. It's just a revision to the original skinning tutorial.

Yes, ini modding, unit modding, structure modding, you know, with us being an OG modding site, not an OG skinning site and all...

Dude, I suggest you to google the web for PhotoShop or Gimp tutorials. What you mention here isn't necessarily a game-modding issue - it's a texturing issue.

First of all, no smiley spamming here, it bugs DL, and we have to obey the lord, or he'll kick us.

Secondly, there is a Photoshop free trial (not giving the link, way too easy to search for and find yourself), but the actual thing is a bought product.

It's not required to skin, but it makes skinning much easier.

Great tutorial! Better than ERC's txt tutorial!

I have just one questions:
How do you change the opacity texture (making parts of the model visible/invisible)? It's not in the tutorial!

Actually, I think that Gimp is even more powerful (and it's free, as it's OpenSource): http://www.gimp.org

and...

I suggest you not to behave that way. It could easily end in getting banned.

That's open for debate, unless you're comparing what a free software is capable of compared to a (heavily) payed one.
Personally, I prefer photoshop, yet, GIMP is easily my second choice, and definitely the best openSource around.
